Stuck on the ground with an IMC rating…
So I spent the first half of the year training for my IMC rating. It really honed my skills and I thoroughly enjoyed it, although I spent the majority of time ‘under the hood’ because the weather was usually very good. Perversely, when I tried to fit in some trips in between, there were winds and rain. Now here I am, often unable to fly because I can’t get out of my home airfield. I read with interest the launch of a consultation by the CAA to increase the number of instrument approaches available for smaller airfields (Flyer, 01/14). Whilst I get the greatest kick out of looking at the landscape below me, I would be happy to fly up into some cloud if I knew that the forecast at my destination was good. I think I would probably only do this in the first instance if it looked as if the conditions would clear later! I have great respect for bad weather having been on the edge of it a few times, hurrying home! Anything that would get me in the sky would be a bonus.
Now we have this weird climate change with gales and flooding. Luckily, I fly from a hard runway so it’s only snow and ice that affect that – it’s only a matter of time! As for the winds, well… Hoping for a flight soon if only the gusts will abate. In the meantime, my sympathy to those that have been affected by the recent floods…
